Louis-Philippe I design (Minted 1831-1839)
We're very pleased to offer a small cache scarce Louis-Philippe I 40 franc gold coins from the early 19th century. Beautiful and historic, they harken back to the Bourbon Restoration, a fascinating time in European history just after the French Revolution and the empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. Minted for just nine years, from 1831 to 1839, these classic French gold coins are exceedingly scarce in uncirculated grades. Examples like these in Very Fine to Extra Fine (VF/XF) condition, while still quite scarce, offer substantially better value. Our VF/XF coins are among the very nicest available in the market, hand-selected for in-grade technical merit. King Louis-Philippe I Louis-Philippe I was King of the French from 1830 to 1848. He was the last king to rule France, although his successor, Louis-Napoleon, would serve as its last monarch with the title Emperor Napoleon III. A member of a cadet line of the House of Bourbon, Louis-Philippe was the son of the Duke of Orleans, a strong supporter of the French Revolution. Known for his love of Enlightenment philosophy and scientific study, Louis-Philippe was celebrated for his courage as a colonel and lieutenant-general during the early revolutionary wars, and was a hero of the Battle of Valmy. During the Reign of Terror, however, he was exiled and lived in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Havana before returning to France during the Bourbon restoration. Becoming King after Charles X abdicated during the July Revolution in 1830, Louis-Philippe was much loved at first and called the "Citizen King.” But in 1848, amidst a fierce economic crisis, he was forced to abdicate and flee to England. Recently rediscovered! Recently, a few small caches of Louis-Philippe I 40 franc coins have come to light in Europe. These gold coins are a true gift from the past and are a must-have for history buffs and European gold coin collectors. Get them while you can because they don't come around very often!
