We're very pleased to offer a small cache scarce Charles X 40 franc gold coins from the early 19th century. Beautiful and historic, they harken back to the Bourbon Restoration, a fascinating time in European history just after the French Revolution and the empire of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Minted for just six years, from 1824 to 1830 (except 1825), these classic French gold coins are exceedingly scarce in uncirculated grades. Examples like these in Very Fine to Extra Fine (VF/XF) condition, while still quite scarce, offer substantially better value. Our VF/XF coins are among the very nicest available in the market, hand-selected for in-grade technical merit.

King Charles X

Charles X ruled as King of France until from 1824 until 1830. Titled Comte D’Artois until his coronation, he was the grandson of Louis XV and younger brother of Louis XVI, who was guillotined during the French Revolution. A renowned lady’s man, he was reputedly the paramour of Marie Antoinette, his sister-in-law.

The most conservative member of the House of Bourbon, Charles resisted all reforms to the ancient regime before and after the Revolution, exiling himself to England and elsewhere until after Napoleon’s fall in 1815. After a short reign he was forced to abdicate the throne during the popular revolt known as the July Revolution in 1830, ending the senior line of the Bourbons, which had held the French crown since the late 16th century.
